Cava, the sparkling wine from Spain, is ridiculously affordable, and incredibly delicious. It’s a great alternative to Prosecco or Champagne. Look for the “Extra Dry” designation. Don’t get confused, because “Extra Dry” doesn’t mean “extra dry.” It actually means “less dry” or “slightly sweet.” The extra dry designation is an underappreciated style of sparkling wine, mostly because people don’t know how to interpret it! “Extra Dry” means you’re getting a softer, easier-to-drink sparkling wine with a hint of sweetness. Fresh pear and apple aromas, and rich citrus, peach and green apple flavors.
White: Domaine de Vaufuget Vouvray $9.99, from Loire Valley, France
Vouvray is a semi-sweet white wine made from Chenin Blanc grapes of the Loire Valley in France. Is this a more desirable buy than any other white wine you’d find for the price? Nope. But everyone I’ve ever had try it, loved it. It’s the wine my family asks me to bring to holiday gatherings. A perfect wine to serve to a wine novice, because it’s delicious and simple. A concentration of rich aromas with a slight honey taste.
