We hosted the first City Wine Tour in the summer of 2011 in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA. Why Harvard Square? It’s what we knew! Former Harvard University roommates, Dan Andrew and Rick Goldberg, had the remarkable idea of combining a walking wine tasting which visited swanky neighborhood restaurants, with humorous anecdotes about area surroundings, like the sights on the Harvard campus. Dan and Rick were also smart enough to coax Yelp account exec Christian Iannucci and Boston wine geek Wes Narron to sign on and bring this vision to fruition: make learning about wine as fun as drinking it.
The group quickly realized hardly anyone cared what Harvard dorm Matt Damon lived in as a freshman (it was Matthews!) and saw the guests expressing greater interest in scooting to the next restaurant for more wine and nibbles. Alas, scrubbed away were the humorous Harvard freshman dorm anecdotes: “Natalie Portman lived in Grays Hall, which housed the high-security students. High security? It had a lock on the front door and a security guard at the front desk!” In place of those knee-slappers? More wine and food. Sorry, Al Gore (he lived in Mower Hall as a freshman).
Meanwhile, Rick enrolled and graduated from Harvard Business School. He used City Wine Tours as an HBS class project and was the only of his HBS classmates to have started a business that was actually making money. In addition to enjoying a good glass of hearty red, Rick is also the CFO, Corporate Retail at Jackson Hewitt Tax Service, Inc.
Dan also started Trademark Tours, which takes tens of thousands of guests all year round on tours of…the Harvard campus…where they learn…which celebrities stayed in what freshman dorms (Bill Gates, Wigglesworth; Mark Zuckerberg, Straus)! Dan was also recently selected by Groups Today as one of the top 10 people in the U.S. of the next generation who are making a difference in the group travel industry with their creative ideas and entrepreneurial spirit. Trademark Tours now employs 80 people and has become the leading Tour Operator servicing Harvard and MIT. Dan is a Board Member of the Harvard Square Business Association.
